DHC does not exist in a vacuum. On the contrary, it is part of, and shaped by the wider world, with all its complexity and dynamism. What are the ‘big picture’ phenomena and mega-trends that will remake our business environment in the coming years? How can, should and will our industry adapt? Let’s find out together!
Track | Technology & Development
The world of DHC is wide and diverse but one thing is universally shared: everyone is looking for ways to do it better - whether you’re a COO, CIO, director, manager, or other professional with a role or interest in technology and future projects. In this track, experts will present their bright, most innovative and disruptive ideas for enhancing the performance of their networks and much more.
Track | Business & Operations
A business oriented look at how plant owners, investors, developers, and financiers can plan and maintain long-term profitability and sustainability. This theme explores real business cases from around the world. Industry experts may come with different experiences and expertise, but they bring similar challenges and goals - sharing the secrets of their success knowledge and bright insights, guaranteeing an open exchange for enhancing the performance of our sector as a whole.
Track | Side events
Side events are held by organisations to launch initiatives, projects or programmes, or showcase products and/or services. Side Events provide the perfect occasion for organising panel discussions on specific topics and showcasing professional networks and associations.
Below you will be able to have a glimpse of the programme overview. We have now launched a Call for Ideas for the 2021 edition. Submit your ideas here!

KEYNOTE
Everyone experiences change differently. Where some see opportunities, others see only threats. A renewable energy subsidy is brilliant news for the solar thermal salesperson but can pull the rug out from under a local gas supplier. New building efficiency requirements might help drive the insulation market, but they can they act as a drag on social housing developers if they’re not properly designed. The remarkable diversity of the European DHC community means we inevitably view the energy transition from a wide range of perspectives, but, as the voice of the sector in Europe, we are routinely asked to articulate a clear and simple position on (1) how we can contribute and (2) what we need to make it happen. This session will explore possible answers to both questions that our entire industry can get behind.

Heating and Cooling has become one of the top priorities on the EU decarbonisation agenda. European policy-makers have broadly acknowledged the importance of the DHC sector as a key infrastructure to enable flexibility, integrate energy sources and energy carriers. To achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the Commission will revise several key pieces of climate and energy legislation. “The ball is in our court”, DHC should lead the transition and set ambitious goals. What should the new framework look like? What do we need to do to enable the sector to support an increased share of renewables and energy efficiency? Is setting a CO2 price across the Heating and Cooling sector the silver bullet that will unlock higher growth for our sector? These are the many questions our experts will debate in this session.

Active players in their local energy markets, collaborating with their existing utilities and energy communities, cities across Europe are surpassing national energy transition targets by proactively setting their own ambitious strategies. Let’s explore together how smart city infrastructure and thermal networks go hand in hand, which drivers accelerate urban district heating projects and what still needs to be done! And above all, what cities need from us, national and EU policy-makers and investors!

In recent years the concept of 5th generation district energy has emerged in scientific literature and it is increasingly being used in the sector. But despite all the hype, we are nowhere close to reaching a consensus on what the term really means. Does 5th generation DHC have a proper definition and specific defining features or is it just a variant of the 4th generation, bolstered by marketing hype? If any session is going to start an argument, it’s this one!

Across the globe cities are competing to attract people and capital; countries and regions are developing systemic answers to become more efficient and resilient and to decrease their environmental impact. Even in places where gas and oil still dominate, District Energy is emerging as the backbone of the 21st century urban environment. This session will explore District Heating and Cooling projects from across the globe and consider success factors and possible lessons that these newcomers can teach the European DHC community.

The challenges are known; the solutions are available, there is a plethora of projects in the pipeline but finding the right investor or funding instrument often proves to be a huge challenge. How do we get the financial sector to join the game? With speakers from different walks of life, the session will explore how to foster cooperation to finance new heat infrastructure by considering the current situation and the available funding tools and identifying the barriers. The DHC and financial sectors are both keen to play the game. Now we just need them on our team!

On the road to a net-zero emissions future, waste heat is bound to play an ever-greater role in decarbonising heat, in combination with renewables. Often heard when discussing waste heat: It’s not our primary business, there are few opportunities for industry and DH companies to sit around the same table, finding the right business model is a headache… The session will bring the perspective of waste heat owners into focus. Concrete cases and best practices from industrial and urban waste heat owners will be used to address the questions surrounding business models, contractual arrangements and examples on how to improve matchmaking and relationship-building. Time to stop wasting heat!

TEMPO Workshop Part I
The H2020 funded project, TEMPO aims to reduce DH network system temperatures to achieve improved network efficiency and capability of integrating sustainable energy sources through innovative digital solutions. In the future, digital energy systems will enable district energy systems to fully optimise their plant and network operation while empowering the end consumer. We will be able to use the connected infrastructures as efficiently as possible, time their production according to forecasted demand and, enhance the usage of renewables. Yet how will we get to this future scenario? The workshop will be an occasion to present the latest results of the application of the TEMPO innovations and to debate about Data Management, Analytics and Artificial Intelligence in the future of District Heating & Cooling.

We all know that the key to the success for any project, be it district heating development from scratch, upgrading or expansion, is to have citizens on board. But how? We will be unpacking this tricky question in this afternoon discussion: How can we involve the general public and improve the image of DH? What digital tools can be used to empower consumers? Are community-owned DH cooperatives the way to go? A panel of experts with different perspectives on the issue will talk it through and present concrete examples.
