What is the role of heat networks in smart cities? How do they contribute to the energy strategies of cities and intelligent districts? And how can we encourage consumers to become prosumers of district heat networks? This session will answer these question through examples and practical achievements. It will provide a real overview of the different scales of a smart city: the consumer, the district, and the city.

Though it’s too soon to feel the impacts in practice, the Clean Energy Package is serious business for the DHC sector. A new buildings Directive, updated rules on energy efficiency, a key seat for DHC and waste heat/cold at the renewables table, new rules for energy markets and plenty more will reshape the entire European energy sector – and often in favour of DHC. With the negotiations concluded and the parliamentary term in Brussels coming to an end, it is time to ensure that all this also helps you on the ground – because it can! Implementation is ongoing and a lot more remains to be done. EU and national experts in their respective fields will share their experiences, advice, worries and aspirations.

The DHC sector is committed to a radical transformation by 2050 and though the journey will be exciting it won’t be easy! One thing that will certainly help is to make the best possible use of what we have around: heat that is needlessly thrown away, in factories, in data centres, in super markets. The concept isn’t new and who in the sector hasn’t thought about it in the past? Yet we don’t make nearly enough use of the huge potential that is out there. So time to answer some questions: Why is using waste heat actually the sensible thing to do? What do we need to think about? What are the barriers and key success factors? This session is all about why and how to get it done.

But one familiar stumbling block gets in the way all to often: the money side of the equation. How can you finance your project? Which investments are crucial? How can you manage the risk? And last but not least: Where does the money come from? We will talk with experienced developers as well as established and new investors about what they need and what they want. Even if some people occasionally say otherwise, DHC is anything but old-fashioned. Digital solutions, smart systems and the latest technologies are out there in the market. And while it’s sometimes hard to distinguish between gimmick and gamechanger, a lot of these new ideas really are making a difference to consumers, operators and communities. From traditional gas markets in Europe to developing countries, to the new global super powers. The success of DHC has attracted plenty of followers that are now building their own frameworks and developing their national markets. Cooling – so often described as the kid brother of the thermal world, it’s about to take its place at the grown-ups table. What role can district cooling play in addressing this challenge? How big is the opportunity and what are the challenges? Come in, sit down and find out
